King Charles displayed his impressive language skills during his initial visit to the Isle of Man as monarch today. He engaged in the ancient Manx language, which has seen a resurgence in recent years, at a special session of the island’s parliament, Tynwald. Additionally, he conversed in French with a local speaker outside the parliament building.

During his visit to the Isle of Man, where he holds the title Lord of Mann, Charles acknowledged the significance of the Manx Language Year. He humorously expressed his hope that he had not unintentionally disrupted the celebration of the language.

Charles’s visit to Tynwald, one of the longest-standing legislatures globally, was marked by a formal welcome to the self-governing crown dependency. The Isle of Man, renowned for the Isle of Man TT motorbike event, boasts not only a parliament but also a government, civil service, judiciary, and independent revenue generation through taxation.

Acknowledging the historical ties between the Crown and the island’s people, Charles commended Tynwald’s enduring partnership with the monarchy. He also highlighted the lineage of royal visits to the Isle of Man, tracing back to Prince Albert’s arrival in 1847.

Following the official proceedings, Charles interacted with the public outside the parliament building, exchanging greetings and conversations with well-wishers. He engaged in multilingual dialogue with a long-term resident originally from France.

The King proceeded to visit the iconic Douglas Promenade, a prominent seafront walkway in the Manx capital, where he toured the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway, meeting tram staff and admiring the historic carriages and shire horses. Commemorating the tramway’s 150th anniversary, Charles unveiled a plaque before taking a brief tram ride along Douglas Promenade and concluding the day with a garden party at Government House.

As the Isle of Man’s Head of State under the Crown Dependency, Charles holds the title Lord of Mann. His last visit to the Isle of Man as Prince of Wales was in April 2012, accompanied by Queen Camilla, to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee.
