John Worboys, also known as John Radford in prison, has been denied parole for the second time, as confirmed by Carrie Johnson, who chose to reveal her identity as a victim during his previous parole hearing. Worboys, 68, was initially convicted in 2009 for 19 sexual offenses against 12 women during 2006-2008. His indefinite imprisonment for public safety, with a minimum term of eight years, was upheld by the court.
Carrie Johnson, the spouse of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, disclosed the Parole Board’s decision on Thursday, announcing that Worboys would not be released or transferred to open conditions. Johnson, formerly known as Carrie Symonds, recounted her own encounter with Worboys when she was 19 years old. Worboys, posing as a cab driver, approached her at a bus stop after a night out in 2007. Despite only having £5, she accepted his offer for a ride back home to Richmond.
Upon entering the cab, Worboys offered her spiked champagne, which she discreetly disposed of. Worboys then coerced her into drinking vodka and she recalls losing memory shortly after. Johnson expressed her distress at not knowing the full extent of the events that transpired, hoping that nothing untoward occurred but plagued by uncertainty.
In 2018, a parole decision to release Worboys was overturned following objections from victims, citing his concerning “risk factors” such as sexual preoccupation and entitlement. Subsequently, in December 2019, Worboys, hailing from Enfield, London, received a life sentence with a minimum term of six years at the Old Bailey for drugging four women. Law enforcement suspects Worboys, a former stripper, victimized over 100 women before his apprehension.
