A Jet2 flight traveling from the United Kingdom to Lanzarote was seen executing a dramatic maneuver when the pilot decided to abort the landing just moments after the aircraft touched the runway.
The incident unfolded as Jet2 flight LS11DF from Birmingham approached Cesar Manrique-Lanzarote Airport in Spain. Video footage captured the plane suddenly ascending after its tail came close to the ground.
The reason for the pilot’s last-minute decision to go around, known as a “TOGA” in aviation, was not immediately evident.
Following the initial aborted landing, the plane successfully touched down approximately 15 minutes later at around 7:30 pm local time on Sunday after a second attempt. Lanzarote Webcam, which shared the footage, described the event as a “nice touch and go-around” with the Jet2 flight from Birmingham.
On social media, one user commented on the proximity of the plane’s tail to the ground, speculating that it might have prompted the pilot to abort the landing. Another suggested that the pilot could have faced challenges with speed control, potentially due to strong winds.
In a separate incident in March, a plane experienced sudden destabilization due to strong winds just before landing on the same runway, prompting the pilot to swiftly execute a ‘TOGA’ maneuver to avoid a mishap.
The Binter flight NT556, originating from Gran Canaria, faced challenging weather conditions during its landing at Cesar Manrique-Lanzarote Airport, with winds reaching approximately 55mph. The footage of this event was also captured by Lanzarote Webcam.
The pilots’ quick decision-making and skillful handling of the situations were crucial in ensuring the safe landing of both flights without any damage. The Mirror has reached out to Jet2 for additional comments.
