“Health Alert: Eye Risks Linked to Weight Loss, Diabetes Injections”

Millions of individuals utilize weight loss and diabetes injections annually, with health authorities cautioning patients to watch for a potentially severe symptom affecting their eyesight.

The warning pertains to medications containing semaglutide such as Wegovy, Ozempic, and Rybelsus. According to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), individuals encountering sudden vision issues should promptly seek medical assistance.

This alert focuses on a rare eye condition called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), which impacts the optic nerve and can result in abrupt vision loss, potentially permanent in some instances.

Patients taking semaglutide are advised by the MHRA to seek urgent medical attention if they notice “sudden loss or rapid deterioration of eyesight.” Treatment should be discontinued if NAION is confirmed.

NAION occurs due to reduced blood flow to the optic nerve, causing damage to the nerve tissue responsible for transmitting visual signals to the brain. Manchester Royal Eye Hospital describes it as a “mini stroke” of the optic nerve, though lacking typical stroke symptoms.

The hospital notes NAION as a common cause of sudden vision loss related to the optic nerve in individuals over 50, with risk factors including diabetes, high blood pressure, and smoking.

Symptoms manifest suddenly and painlessly, with patients often observing blurred, cloudy, or missing areas in their vision, typically affecting one eye.

The MHRA’s caution follows a safety assessment of semaglutide drugs. Epidemiological studies revealed that adults with type 2 diabetes on semaglutide had approximately double the risk of developing NAION compared to non-users.

Despite this, health officials stress the rarity of the condition, categorizing it as “very rare,” affecting an estimated one in 10,000 individuals using the medication.

Semaglutide, found in Wegovy for weight loss and Ozempic and Rybelsus for diabetes treatment, has seen increased prescriptions due to rising demand for weight management solutions.

The MHRA underscores the importance of patients consulting healthcare professionals before discontinuing prescribed medications, highlighting that the benefits of semaglutide outweigh known risks when used as directed.

Research from the National Centre for Biotechnology Information identifies NAION as a leading cause of sudden vision loss in older adults, often presenting as abrupt, painless vision loss in one eye, frequently noticed upon waking.

Individuals experiencing sudden vision loss, blurred vision, or rapidly deteriorating eyesight while on semaglutide are urged to seek immediate medical evaluation. Early intervention aids in determining the cause of symptoms and the need for ongoing treatment.
