Iran has dismissed the extended ceasefire proposed by US President Donald Trump and has once again shut down the vital trade route of the Strait of Hormuz. Trump, via a post on Truth Social, announced the continuation of the military blockade and the extension of the ceasefire until further discussions are concluded.

An Iranian news outlet quoted an advisor to Iranian Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf who criticized Trump’s ceasefire extension as a tactic to delay for a surprise attack, stating that the losing side cannot dictate terms. The advisor emphasized that it is now time for Iran to take the lead.

Contrary to reports, Iranian state media clarified that they did not seek an extension of the ceasefire. Tensions have escalated between the US and Iran since February 28, following joint strikes on key Iranian sites by the US and Israel. Iran retaliated by targeting sites in the Middle East and closing the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passageway for global oil trade.

Despite the temporary ceasefire from the US’s perspective, no permanent resolution has been reached between the two nations. The US has enforced a blockade on Iranian ports in the strait to pressure negotiations and reopen the route for trade.

Iran reaffirmed on Tuesday through state media that they will not reopen the Strait of Hormuz as long as the naval blockade persists, and they are prepared to break the blockade by force if necessary. The White House announced the postponement of US Vice President JD Vance’s trip to Pakistan in light of the extended ceasefire and pending proposal from Iran.

No further updates were provided by the White House regarding potential in-person meetings scheduled for the following day.
