A death row prisoner who believes he is indestructible narrowly escaped execution at the eleventh hour.
John Richard Wood, aged 56, asserts that he has experienced death and resurrection on three occasions. He was slated for the death penalty after spending over 25 years behind bars for the murder of a state trooper in South Carolina, USA. However, his mental state was deemed too unstable to proceed with the execution.
In December 2000, Wood fatally shot Eric Nicholson during a traffic stop. Following the incident, he fled the scene and engaged in a shootout with law enforcement, injuring another officer.
After evaluations by three mental health professionals, it was determined that Wood lacked the mental capacity to comprehend the reasons for his punishment.
Suffering from schizophrenia, Wood maintains a belief in his immortality, even claiming to have faced execution thrice before. The presiding judge revealed that Wood anticipates a resurrection should the state carry out his death sentence.
Additionally, Wood falsely believes he has already been pardoned by the governor.
During his 2002 trial, Wood perceived the courtroom as an instrument of ‘Beloved Kevin Rudolph,’ a deity engaged in a planetary conquest. He perceives himself as possessing ‘wings’ and eternal life to combat the judicial system.
The court, with the input of two psychiatrists and a psychologist, concluded that Wood’s severe mental illness disqualifies him from execution.
While acknowledging the rationale behind his initial death sentence, Wood remains convinced that law enforcement unjustly accused him of a heinous crime.
The judge’s decision will be reviewed by the South Carolina Supreme Court, which will have the authority to affirm or overturn the ruling.
