In today’s digital age, it is crucial to ensure the security of your online accounts. World Password Day, observed on Thursday, May 7, serves as a timely reminder that many individuals still leave their online accounts vulnerable to cyber threats due to poor password practices.

Whether connecting to home Wi-Fi or accessing various online services, millions of people continue to rely on easily crackable passwords. Furthermore, the habit of using the same password across multiple accounts makes it simpler for cybercriminals to breach personal information.

Recent findings from Hybrid Cloud Services reveal that one out of eight individuals uses a single password across all accounts, a risky practice. Additionally, around 36% of people use between one and three passwords for all their online activities.

Only 19% of users opt for a different password for each account, regarded as a more secure approach to online security. Unfortunately, despite repeated warnings from cybersecurity experts, common and weak passwords like “admin,” “123456,” and “password” remain prevalent among UK users.

To enhance account security, experts recommend implementing two-factor authentication whenever possible to add an extra layer of protection. Creating longer, complex passwords and utilizing a password manager are also highly recommended to safeguard credentials and discourage password reuse.

Matt Cooke, EMEA Cybersecurity Strategist at Proofpoint, emphasizes the importance of avoiding easily guessable or personal information in passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication, and using password managers to enhance security. He suggests updating personal passwords biannually and business passwords quarterly for optimal security.

Here are three straightforward methods to strengthen password security:
1. Use passphrases instead of simple passwords by combining unrelated words into a lengthy phrase.
2. Generate unique passwords for each account using tools or password managers to create strong, random passwords.
3. Employ a password manager to securely store credentials and simplify the management of strong, unique passwords across all accounts.
