A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, May 6, when a passenger bus and a fuel tanker truck collided head-on on the Trans-Sumatra Highway in North Musi Rawas regency, South Sumatra province, Indonesia. The collision resulted in the death of 16 individuals and left four others injured, according to officials.

The bus, carrying approximately 20 passengers, was en route from Lubuklinggau city to Jambi city when it collided with the tanker truck traveling in the opposite direction. Initial investigations suggest that the bus may have emitted sparks before the crash, leading the driver to swerve to the right in an attempt to avoid a more severe accident. However, the high-speed approach of the oil tanker truck left little time to prevent a direct impact.

The collision led to a fiery blaze that engulfed both vehicles, trapping many victims inside. Among the deceased were the bus driver, 13 passengers, and the tanker truck’s driver and assistant, all of whom perished in the flames. Four survivors were rescued from the wreckage and taken to a nearby health facility for treatment, with three sustaining severe burns and one suffering minor injuries.

Authorities are still working to determine the total number of fatalities as they trace the passenger manifest. Photos and videos shared by the National Search and Rescue Agency depicted firefighters battling the inferno as thick black smoke and orange flames billowed into the sky. The charred remnants of the bus and tanker truck, along with scattered twisted metal, littered the highway.

Rescue operations, involving disaster response teams and traffic police, were hindered by victims pinned inside the vehicles, causing traffic disruptions along the highway. Sixteen body bags containing the victims’ remains were brought to Siti Aisyah Hospital in Lubuk Linggau for identification. Police teams have identified five victims, including the bus driver, two crew members, the tanker driver, and one passenger, while efforts continue to identify the remaining 11 individuals.

The bodies, severely burned in the fire, are undergoing identification processes before being transported to Bhayangkara Police Hospital in Palembang for autopsies. Police investigations have refuted earlier speculations, suggesting that the bus veered into the opposite lane while trying to avoid a pothole, leading to the fatal collision and subsequent fire.
