Hotel patrons are being cautioned to remain vigilant against deceptive scam communications following a security breach at a prominent hotel group. Personal information of guests scheduled to stay at one of the chain’s properties was compromised over a six-month period.

BWH Hotels, the umbrella company for WorldHotels, Best Western Hotels & Resorts, and Sure Hotels, notified affected customers via email about the breach, indicating that names, email addresses, phone numbers, and home addresses, along with reservation details, were accessed between October 14, 2025, and April 22. Notably, sensitive financial information was not stored in the breached system and was therefore not compromised.

The company confirmed that immediate action was taken to halt unauthorized access and further measures were implemented to fortify security protocols against future breaches. Customers were urged to be cautious of unsolicited emails, texts, WhatsApp messages, or calls related to hotel bookings to prevent falling victim to potential scams.

Privacy experts have highlighted the significance of the stolen data and its potential exploitation in future scams. Booking information can enhance the credibility of follow-up scams by allowing fraudsters to make references to real stays, dates, locations, or reservation numbers.

According to Peter Nguyen, a privacy expert from Protect My Data, individuals should not underestimate the impact of such breaches simply because payment details were not compromised. He emphasized that scammers can craft convincing messages using details like names, phone numbers, hotels, stay dates, and booking references.

Nguyen advised guests to exercise caution when receiving unexpected messages concerning booking issues, payments, refunds, or reservations, as scammers could pose as hotel representatives, booking platforms, customer support teams, or payment departments. He warned against engaging with messages requesting payments, codes, logins, or verifications and recommended contacting the hotel or booking platform directly.

Additionally, Nguyen highlighted the risks associated with WhatsApp and SMS messages, as they create a sense of urgency and prompt quicker responses compared to emails. Guests were advised by BWH Hotels to refrain from interacting with suspicious communications requesting sensitive information, even if they mention a BWH Hotels property or an upcoming reservation.

While many individuals are concerned about the compromise of card details in a breach, Nguyen emphasized that contact and booking information can pose serious risks, enabling scammers to tailor their fraudulent activities more effectively.

As travelers gear up for summer trips, weekend getaways, and last-minute bookings, the potential for hotel-related scams is heightened. Nguyen cautioned guests to scrutinize messages received close to their check-in dates and recommended treating unexpected booking communications with suspicion until verified through official channels.

In conclusion, guests were reminded to verify the authenticity of messages, avoid clicking on links in unexpected communications, and refrain from sharing personal information unless through trusted channels. In case of any suspicious activity, individuals were advised to contact their bank promptly and take necessary steps to secure their accounts and personal information.
