A grieving family, who endured a heartbreaking loss of two family members in the same river, is supporting a call for action by the Mirror following recent tragic drownings. Grandfather Michael Scott was shocked when he received a call from his daughter, Zoe, frantically informing him that his 16-year-old grandson, Tyler Wilson, was in the river. Tyler, a proficient swimmer, tragically drowned in the River Aire and Calder near Methley Bridge in Castleford, West Yorkshire, succumbing to cold water shock on May 24, 2023.

The family had experienced a similar tragedy over a decade ago when Michael’s younger brother, Andrew Scott, who could not swim, lost his life while crossing stepping stones. Reflecting on the devastating events, Michael emphasized how he had warned Tyler about water safety due to his brother’s fate. The family never imagined their history would repeat itself in such a tragic manner.

Despite their efforts to educate Tyler about water risks, the family had to endure the harrowing experience of Tyler’s drowning. The community came together as authorities worked to retrieve Tyler’s body from the river, leaving the family in anguish. Tyler’s mother, Zoe Graham, expressed the profound impact of the loss on their lives, highlighting the ongoing pain and heartache they endure daily.

The Mirror has initiated the ‘Save Lives for Sam campaign’ to address the alarming rate of drowning incidents in the UK, declaring it a national emergency. Various organizations and notable figures have joined forces with the campaign, advocating for urgent government action to prevent further tragedies. Tyler’s family, along with other bereaved families, are actively supporting the campaign to raise awareness about water safety and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

As they continue to mourn Tyler’s loss, the family urges young people to prioritize safety around water bodies and be aware of potential dangers. They emphasize the devastating ripple effect of such tragedies and call for increased education and awareness, particularly targeting platforms like TikTok to reach a wider audience. The family’s message resonates with the broader campaign’s goal of saving lives and preventing further losses in the water.
