A global campaign is in progress to raise awareness about the rebranding of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, commonly known as PCOS. This medical condition impacts more than 3.1 million individuals in the UK, influencing various aspects such as weight, metabolic health, mental well-being, hormones, skin, and reproductive system.

Even though PCOS is a chronic hormonal disorder, recent research has revealed that individuals with the condition do not experience an increase in abnormal ovarian cysts. This finding contradicts the primary characteristic on which the former name was based.

For over a decade, experts have advocated for a name change to avoid misconceptions and oversimplifications of the disorder. The updated term, Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS), aims to enhance understanding, diagnosis, and treatment for patients with PCOS.

Professor Helena Teede expressed concern over delayed diagnoses and inadequate care for those affected by the condition. The Director of Monash University’s Monash Centre for Health Research & Implementation emphasized that the name change represents a crucial step toward long-term recognition and improvement in managing PCOS.

The evolution of the name change initiative has been documented in The Lancet medical journal, tracing back 14 years of collaboration among global experts and individuals with firsthand experience of PCOS. The transition to the new name, PMOS, is expected to be fully implemented in the 2028 International PMOS Guideline update.

The renaming process prioritized patient benefits, scientific accuracy, effective communication, stigma avoidance, and cultural sensitivity. This milestone development is anticipated to drive significant advancements in clinical practices and research worldwide.

Rachel Morman, Chair of Verity (PCOS UK), commended the new name for highlighting the hormonal and metabolic dimensions of the condition. She emphasized that this shift in terminology will underscore the seriousness of PCOS as a complex long-term health issue.
