An approximate 1.5 billion individuals watched the final match of the World Cup. Among them were devoted fans who gathered around large screens near destroyed buildings in Gaza to support Spain as they triumphed over Argentina 1-0 in extra time. The fans cheered for Spain due to the country’s backing of Gaza during its conflict with Israel.

The installation of giant screens during the tournament provided residents of Gaza with a much-needed break from their daily challenges. Numan Abdullah, a local who witnessed the game, mentioned that the community united to show solidarity with Spain, appreciating the country’s longstanding support for Palestinians.

The gathering not only expressed support for Spain but also conveyed a message of peace and solidarity with nations backing the Palestinian cause. Sadly, Mohammed al-Wahidi, an aid worker instrumental in organizing the screenings, lost his life in an Israeli airstrike earlier in the month.

Al-Wahidi, formerly an English teacher, transitioned to become a key figure in the Egyptian Relief Committee in Gaza, supported by Egypt. He was known for his hands-on approach in humanitarian efforts, working closely with affected individuals rather than from an office. Tragically, the UN documented the deaths of numerous aid workers since the conflict’s onset, including Al-Wahidi.

Aid workers initiated the World Cup screenings to uplift spirits in the camps, particularly among young children. The matches featured included the contentious game where Egypt was defeated 3-2 by Argentina.

Following an intense Hamas-led attack on southern Israel in October 2023, the Israeli military launched a campaign in Gaza resulting in casualties and hostages. The aftermath of the conflict led to a significant death toll in Gaza, with Hamas authorities confirming the figures to be reliable according to the UN’s assessment.
