A frightening gas explosion in a Malaga village has resulted in several injuries, including two children. The incident occurred at the Mesón Morisco restaurant, leading to the collapse of the building’s storeroom and an adjacent residence. An estimated 50 diners were present at the time of the sudden blast, causing concern among locals who initially thought a bomb had detonated.
Debris scattered throughout the Sayalonga village in the Axarquía region following the explosion around 8 pm on Tuesday, June 16. Emergency services reported that eight individuals, including two children, sustained minor injuries that did not necessitate hospitalization. The severely damaged property has been partially secured by the Guardia Civil, the TEDAX bomb disposal unit, and firefighters who are actively investigating the explosion’s cause.
Resident Marisa Vilches recounted hearing the explosion at home, initially mistaking it for an earthquake. She rushed to the restaurant upon learning of the incident, discovering a scene of destruction but thankfully no serious injuries, only property damage. Another local, María del Carmen Rodríguez, described how the explosion rattled the windows in her house, likening it to a bomb detonation.
The restaurant was full with approximately 50 diners watching a Spain match against Cape Verde. Authorities suspect a potential gas leak from stored cylinders as the cause of the blast, although an official inquiry is ongoing.
