A warning from charities highlights that a freeze on housing benefits is driving individuals into a cycle of debt, creating overwhelming situations for claimants. Recent research reveals that less than 2% of properties in Britain are affordable for those receiving benefits, a decrease from the previous year. This trend is leading to financial strain, poverty, and a rise in homelessness, with many families already seeking shelter in temporary accommodations.
For nearly a decade, the local housing allowance (LHA) rates, which determine the maximum rental support available, have remained stagnant. Advocacy groups are calling on the government to lift the freeze on housing benefits to prevent more households from falling into poverty and homelessness.
Prominent figures like Andy Burnham, who proposed a significant council house building initiative, have criticized the housing benefit freeze. Burnham emphasized that the current system forces families to rely on benefits to afford private rents, ultimately resulting in homelessness and increased financial burdens on councils.
Crisis’s Chief Executive, Matt Downie, expressed concerns about the dire situation faced by low-income individuals across the country. He highlighted the urgent need to adjust housing benefit rates to align with rental costs, preventing individuals from being trapped in a cycle of debt and homelessness.
Citizens Advice’s Chief Executive, Dame Clare Moriarty, echoed these sentiments, noting that many families are struggling to make ends meet due to frozen housing benefits and soaring rents. She emphasized the necessity of addressing the housing cost crisis to alleviate the financial burden on private renters.
In response, a Government spokesperson outlined ongoing efforts to address housing challenges, including the construction of 1.5 million homes and investments in social and affordable housing. Additionally, initiatives such as the Crisis and Resilience Fund, increased National Living Wage, and substantial investments in homelessness services aim to combat poverty and enhance living standards for individuals across the UK.
