Tourists had to evacuate their lodgings as a severe wildfire menaces a popular vacation spot. Firefighters are currently combatting wildfires in Portugal, Greece, and Spain under extreme conditions with temperatures exceeding 40C in recent weeks.
Disturbing images reveal thick smoke from the fire near a swimming pool in Grazalema, Cádiz, forcing the evacuation of Hotel Fuerte and residences. Footage also captures fire crews battling flames in El Alamillo, within the Sierra de Grazalema mountain range, utilizing helicopters and planes to assist in firefighting efforts.
Earlier this year, individuals were compelled to vacate accommodations in Grazalema due to landslide risks from Storm Leonardo’s heavy rains. Now, nearly 200 people have been instructed to leave their homes due to forest fires in the natural park, a beloved destination for hiking and outdoor activities.
Efforts by the Andalusian Forest Fire Prevention and Extinction Service have successfully contained the blaze affecting a 200-hectare area. Antonio Sanz, Andalucia’s regional minister, mentioned that while the situation has improved with no active flames currently, there are areas still smoldering, requiring precise attention using aircraft to address any remaining heat sources and prevent reignition.
The fire impacted a region of ecological significance, including an oak forest, and investigations are ongoing to determine the cause. Sanz confirmed that fire crews will continue to monitor the area until the fire is completely extinguished.
Authorities in Thessaloniki, Greece urged residents to stay indoors and close windows due to toxic smoke from a burning recycling plant engulfed by a wildfire. In Greece, a significant wildfire broke out near Athens, with extensive firefighting efforts deployed. Additionally, a wildfire in the Girona region of Spain, which began on Friday, has now been contained after burning nearly 2,200 hectares.
