Former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White have stirred up controversy by announcing their intentions to enter the 2027 WNBA draft. The move has been met with criticism, with one sports columnist condemning it as a disrespectful and politically motivated stunt aimed at undermining transgender athletes.

The WNBA has been embroiled in a series of debates following comments made by Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham regarding transgender individuals in sports. Kanter Freedom and White have stated that their plans are contingent on the league’s regulations, which currently allow only women to play without explicitly excluding transgender women.

Kanter Freedom emphasized on Instagram that he meets all the requirements to join the WNBA, highlighting the importance of self-declaration. White, who had a brief NBA career, mentioned in an interview with Fox News that he sometimes identifies as a woman specifically for basketball purposes.

Despite the league’s eligibility criteria stating that only women can play, the WNBA has not addressed transgender athletes directly. The league recently addressed ongoing discussions regarding transgender athletes and condemned any efforts to use the topic to marginalize others.

The push by Kanter Freedom and White has been interpreted as a right-wing movement’s attempt to target the WNBA, a league known for its diverse and inclusive nature. Critics argue that the players’ motivations are disingenuous and part of a broader agenda to exclude transgender individuals from public life.

The broader context of this debate involves a growing trend of right-wing activists using women’s sports as a platform to promote anti-trans sentiments. This trend has gained traction in recent years, leading to policy changes that impact transgender athletes’ participation in sports at various levels.
