A couple in Florida, Brian, 40, and Sara Wilkes, 37, have avoided jail time for child neglect charges after making an out-of-court agreement with prosecutors. They were arrested in 2025 when beachgoers reported that their infant was left unattended at Miramar Beach. The parents had left their six-month-old baby girl under their beach tent while she napped and went for a walk with their other children, losing track of time. The baby was found unharmed by Good Samaritans and the parents admitted to leaving her alone. The incident sparked concern as the baby was left unattended for over an hour.

Walton County Sheriff’s Office Major Dustin Cosson emphasized the importance of not leaving children unattended, stating that even though beaches are family-friendly, common sense should prevail. The Florida Department of Children and Families intervened, placing all the Wilkes’ children in state custody until relatives from Texas could care for them.

The Wilkes entered into a deferred prosecution agreement, paying fines, performing community service, attending parenting classes, and being restricted from visiting Walton County. They must comply with the conditions within a year, maintain good behavior, and avoid legal trouble, or face neglect proceedings being reinstated.
