Fighter jets were dispatched over Washington DC today, with reports of residents hearing a loud ‘sonic boom’. The F-16 aircraft were deployed to intercept a civilian plane that breached restricted airspace around 11:15 am.
As the jets escorted the unauthorized aircraft from the restricted zone over the US capital, residents were startled by the sonic boom. Washington DC is safeguarded by a highly controlled airspace area known as the Special Flight Rules Area, requiring pilots to adhere to strict protocols and maintain continuous communication with air traffic control to prevent unauthorized entries within a 30-nautical-mile radius.
The US Air Force confirmed the deployment of fighter jets to intercept the “general aviation aircraft” that violated restricted airspace, ensuring its safe removal from the area. Pilots were also reminded to stay informed about restricted areas, including those around Washington DC and Mar-a-Lago in Florida, where Trump resides.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) stated that their F-16 fighter aircraft from the Continental U.S. NORAD Region successfully intercepted the unauthorized aircraft that breached FAA restricted airspace over the United States National Capital Region. The aircraft was escorted away without further incident, emphasizing the importance of checking FAA Notice to Airmen (NOTAMs) and Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs).
NORAD further emphasized the protocol for pilots if intercepted, instructing them to switch frequencies and change course until further instructions are received. They highlighted their defense network of radars, satellites, and fighter aircraft to identify and respond to potential threats, showcasing their execution of aerospace warning and control missions for the US and Canada.
The reminder to pilots stemmed from the frequent occurrences of aircraft straying into restricted zones, with several recent cases of planes entering prohibited airspace near locations where Donald Trump has been present. Last September, six unauthorized planes entered restricted airspace over Bedminster, New Jersey, during a weekend when Trump was at his golf course. NORAD intervened, directing the small private aircraft away from the Trump National Golf Club, with F-16 fighter jets intercepting one of the planes.
