A father who caused the death of his three-month-old son by shaking him and then falsely claiming the baby fell off his lap has been sentenced to prison.
Bradley Thomas, described as “sleep deprived,” inflicted fatal injuries on his son, Emmerson-Oak Thomas, through violent and forceful shaking on October 5 of the previous year. Following the incident, Emmerson displayed breathing difficulties and unusual arm movements, but Thomas delayed seeking help for 30 minutes after waking his partner before eventually dialing 999.
Emmerson was rushed to James Cook University Hospital and later transferred to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, where he tragically passed away on October 8, at just three months and 16 days old.
Thomas, aged 23, was found guilty of murder at Teesside Crown Court and received a life sentence with a minimum term of 14 years.
During sentencing, Mr. Justice Sheldon KC lamented the loss of a promising life, stating that Emmerson was a healthy baby with a bright future that Thomas’ actions robbed him of. Sheldon noted that Thomas, who was fatigued and frustrated due to lack of sleep, failed to settle Emmerson throughout the night, despite an agreement with his partner to handle night feeds while she cared for the baby during the day.
Despite expressing remorse for his son’s injuries, Thomas initially misled authorities about the cause, claiming Emmerson fell from his lap while he was asleep on the sofa. Subsequent evidence revealed the truth behind the severe brain injuries inflicted by Thomas’ violent shaking.
Senior Investigating Officer, T/Detective Superintendent Deb Fenny, described the investigation as distressing and emotional, emphasizing the pursuit of justice for Emmerson-Oak throughout. Fenny acknowledged the collaborative effort of all involved in the investigation and prosecution, highlighting the dedication and professionalism displayed in seeking justice for the victim.
