Shocking video footage captured the moment a mother ran a red light and collided with a police car in Birkenhead, Merseyside, causing the police vehicle to catch fire. Stacie Wright, 35, driving a white Mercedes-Benz A-Class, ignored the red light at the junction, resulting in the collision with the police car. CCTV footage presented in Liverpool Crown Court showed Wright turning right into the path of the oncoming police vehicle before the crash occurred.
The collision destroyed the police car, valued at £15,000, and incurred salvage costs of £2,500. Constable Thompson, the driver of the police vehicle, described the collision as “terrifying” and detailed the injuries he sustained, including cuts, bruises, tinnitus, and rib pain that took two months to heal. The officer expressed the emotional impact of the incident, highlighting the fear and trauma experienced during and after the crash.
The crash not only caused physical injuries but also emotional distress to the officer and his family, including his 12-year-old daughter. The officer had to take time off work due to the pain and missed training opportunities, leading to financial challenges. In court, Wright, described as a hardworking single mother, expressed genuine remorse for the incident, attributed to a momentary lapse of attention.
Following the court proceedings, Wright received an eight-month suspended jail sentence, a 12-month driving ban, and a fine of £272. The presiding judge emphasized the seriousness of the offense, noting that the CCTV evidence clearly demonstrated Wright’s disregard for the red light, leading to the severe consequences of the collision.
