A father of three children sought medical help from his doctor due to difficulties swallowing food and was devastated to learn he has terminal cancer. John Robertson, a 35-year-old resident of Ayr, Scotland, was recently diagnosed with stage four oesophageal adenocarcinoma, a rare form of cancer that affects the glandular cells in the oesophagus. Beginning with trouble swallowing in February, he rapidly lost three stone in just two and a half months while enduring severe chest pain.
Following his visit to the GP, John underwent an endoscopy that revealed a bleed and a tumor covering approximately 75% of his oesophagus. The cancer has metastasized to various parts of his body, including his lungs, throat, liver, and right adrenal gland, with medical professionals estimating he has about nine months to live.
Expressing his anguish, John shared his heartbreak at the prospect of not witnessing his children – Jorja, 15, Paris-Cole, eight, and Clay-Ty, four – grow up, or creating a future with his wife of 11 years, Nicole, 29. Describing the news as crushing, he emphasized his desire to be present for his children and guide them through life’s milestones.
Despite always maintaining good health, John grew concerned when food started getting stuck while eating. Subsequently, he experienced intense chest pain and tightness around his ribcage, prompting his visit to the doctor. CT scans and biopsies confirmed the cancer diagnosis, with doctors suggesting the tumor may have been present for years before symptoms emerged.
Currently adhering to an all-liquid diet, John is preparing for chemotherapy, with the possibility of needing a feeding tube. He acknowledged the surreal experience of appearing healthy while battling a life-threatening illness, highlighting the disparity between his outward appearance and internal struggle.
In an effort to access private treatment and clinical trials unavailable through the NHS, John initiated a fundraising campaign. He is awaiting confirmation for participation in trials in Germany and London, with funds raised also intended to facilitate meaningful experiences with his family.
Expressing his determination to create lasting memories, John emphasized the importance of cherishing moments with his loved ones amid the uncertainty of his condition.
