Following an armed standoff in Bedford, a man was fatally shot by police.
Bedfordshire Police responded to reports of vehicle damage on Aylesbury Road on Monday night. Upon arrival, they encountered a man in his forties who had barricaded himself inside a property and was reportedly making threats.
Specialist armed officers arrived at the scene around 10.40pm, accompanied by police negotiators and other emergency services. As a precaution, several residences on the street were evacuated during the standoff.
After several hours of attempting to communicate with the man, he brandished a weapon just after 9.30am the following day.
Subsequently, armed police officers discharged their weapons, resulting in the man being pronounced dead before 10.30am. The deceased’s family has been notified of the tragic event.
Residents are now permitted to return to their homes, although a cordon will remain in place as investigations progress.
Bedfordshire Police has initiated a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which is conducting an inquiry into the incident.
