Groups of individuals across the United Kingdom will come together in unity against hatred this week. Over 350 communities nationwide are organizing numerous events to combat increasing division, transforming skate parks and shopping areas into communal spaces. A variety of activities, such as disco dances, plant exchanges, art workshops, and shared meals, are part of “A Million Acts of Hope,” a week-long initiative from May 13–20 dedicated to celebrating togetherness and everyday kindness.

The initiative coincides with a recent survey of 4,144 individuals conducted by FocalData, indicating that 65% of Britons view their local communities as peaceful and welcoming, contradicting prevalent narratives of deep societal rifts. In Swindon, more than 25 events are scheduled, featuring makeshift living rooms in outdoor venues furnished with sofas, coffee tables, plants, and board games.

These pop-up lounges will be set up in various locations like a skate park, community garden, park, and inside a shopping center, encouraging spontaneous interactions among strangers over a cup of tea. Terry Johnson, the Inclusion, Collaboration, and Community Development Manager for Voluntary Action Swindon, emphasized the campaign’s aim to showcase the genuine connections and solidarity present in daily life.

The initiative also includes intergenerational dance parties, community art sessions, and multicultural food-sharing events nationwide. Supported by over 200 charities, including Crisis, Mencap, Trussell, and Together With Refugees, the campaign seeks to highlight the countless acts of compassion and solidarity happening in communities every day.

Matt Downie from Crisis emphasized the kindness and support prevalent in communities, highlighting the significance of small acts of kindness and resilience in fostering optimism. Similarly, representatives from various charities stressed the importance of actions over mere words in promoting inclusion and unity, urging individuals to choose hope over hate.

With over 60,000 people already signing the UK’s largest “thank you card” to recognize community members, those interested in contributing can visit millionactsofhope.org to show their support.
