Swiss authorities announced on Monday the apprehension of a 43-year-old individual in connection with a fatal shooting incident at a party in Aarau over the weekend. During the early hours of Sunday, a 22-year-old Italian woman lost her life, and five others sustained injuries at the gathering hosted at a covered horse racing venue.
Following an extensive operation, the police arrested a Swiss man aged 43 just before 1 a.m. on Monday, suspecting his involvement in the attack. The authorities are actively investigating the circumstances and possible motives behind the incident, indicating that a sole perpetrator might be responsible, as stated by the Aargau canton police without divulging further specifics.
Authorities revealed on Sunday that they are exploring three potential motives for the shooting, which include a mass shooting, an act of terrorism, or an unidentified criminal intent. Recovered cartridges at the crime scene suggested the use of two different bullet calibers, potentially from a handgun and a larger firearm like an assault rifle, as per police reports.
While the Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger hinted at the cartridges’ resemblance to those utilized in the Russian AK-74 assault rifle and its variations, law enforcement declined to verify this information. The young Italian victim, identified as Maria Spinelli by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, tragically succumbed to the violent incident.
