United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent dismissed any notion of a war between the U.S. and Canada, humorously suggesting that Canada might send “submarines from the Edmonton mall” to attack. Bessent blamed Prime Minister Mark Carney for the ongoing tensions, implying that Carney benefits politically from the conflict.

In an interview with CNBC, Bessent downplayed the idea of a trade war with Canada, emphasizing the vast difference in size between the two countries. He highlighted the impracticality of Canada posing a significant threat due to its size compared to the U.S.

Bessent’s remarks drew attention to the defunct recreational submarines once present at West Edmonton Mall, emphasizing that the submarines were dismantled years ago. Despite this, the verbal sparring between the Trump administration and Canada intensified after a trade deal collapsed abruptly.

Carney cited unfair last-minute changes proposed by the U.S. during negotiations as the reason for withdrawing Canada’s team. He particularly pointed out the detrimental effects these changes would have on Canada’s trade flexibility and support for specific industries.

Following the failed negotiations, the U.S. imposed significant tariffs on Canadian exports, prompting Canada to reciprocate. Amid escalating tensions, U.S. President Donald Trump used social media to criticize Canada, while Canadian officials, including Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew, pushed back against the U.S.

Despite the verbal jousting, Carney refrained from engaging in taunts and confirmed that a trade war with the U.S. was underway. Bessent expressed disappointment in Carney’s handling of the situation, accusing him of prioritizing political gains over the well-being of Canadians.

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne planned to engage with G20 counterparts to reinforce Canada’s reliability as a trade partner amidst global uncertainties. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also emphasized the damaging effects of the ongoing trade dispute on both countries, advocating for a return to negotiations for mutual benefit.
