Two individuals lost their lives and multiple others sustained injuries in a fire that occurred at a popular destination for British tourists. The incident took place at a residence in Mallorca, Spain, where nine individuals required treatment for smoke inhalation, and two individuals tragically perished, according to a spokesperson from the Civil Guard.
The fire began at approximately 5 am on the third floor of a residential building in the Magaluf area, as reported by the Civil Guard. Approximately two hours later, the fire was brought under control. The nationalities of the victims were not immediately disclosed, and authorities are conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire.
Magaluf, situated approximately 14 miles from Palma de Mallorca, is a sought-after beach and nightlife spot for British travelers. The fire originated on the third floor of Edificio Trianón on C/ Federico García Lorca, near Punta Ballena. The intensity of the fire filled the entire building with smoke, hindering the victims’ escape attempts from their apartments.
Local reports indicated that residents in the apartment complex attempted unsuccessfully to put out the fire, which rapidly spread to upper floors. Calvià Town Hall confirmed the tragic incident and mentioned that emergency services were still present at the scene. Mayor Juan Antonio Amengual expressed deep sadness over the situation, emphasizing the severity of the blaze that initially seemed minor.
Mayor Amengual highlighted specific challenges faced during the incident, including the difficult access to the burning flat for firefighters and the potential impact of residents heading to the stairwell instead of remaining in their apartments.
