A prominent organization focusing on domestic violence issues has raised concerns about a significant rise in incidents of violence within relationships and families during major World Cup matches. The police recently made numerous arrests ahead of the tournament to address this issue.

Statistics provided by Women’s Aid reveal alarming trends related to domestic abuse cases during England matches, showing a 38% increase in incidents when the team loses and a 26% surge when they win. Data indicates that nearly 3.8 million individuals aged 16 and over in England and Wales, representing around 8% of the population, faced domestic abuse last year, with women accounting for 2.2 million of those cases.

In response to these concerning figures, over 200 individuals have been apprehended in a recent police operation targeting potential offenders before the tournament’s commencement. West Midlands Police conducted raids on suspected offenders’ residences, emphasizing the need to deter perpetrators, as the force typically witnesses a spike in reported offenses during June and July, often tied to major sporting events.

Veronica Oakeshott, Head of External Affairs at Women’s Aid, highlighted the heightened risks faced by individuals during emotionally charged events like the World Cup, where increased alcohol consumption can exacerbate existing domestic abuse situations. She emphasized the need for awareness and support for those affected, particularly women and children in abusive environments.

Solace, another charity addressing domestic violence, launched a campaign called #StopItComingHome to raise awareness on the issue. West Midlands Police reiterated their commitment to combatting domestic abuse, with Detective Inspector Charlie Sparks emphasizing the swift response and safeguarding measures taken by law enforcement.

During the Euro 2024 tournament, police reported 351 incidents of domestic abuse related to football. It is crucial to recognize that violence against women and children encompasses various forms of abuse beyond physical harm, including psychological, emotional, financial, and sexual abuse.

Individuals experiencing domestic abuse can seek help by contacting the 24/7 National Domestic Abuse Helpline at 0808 2000 247. These efforts aim to provide support and resources to those in need during challenging times.
