Evacuation orders are gradually being lifted in areas near Clinton and Summerland, two of the most concerning wildfires in British Columbia. The B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS) has indicated that the smoke covering the southern part of the province is expected to persist until Sunday. An unpredictable weather pattern could lead to more lightning-induced fires in B.C. on Sunday, as per a fire information officer. Following weeks of closure due to the Pear Lake wildfire, Highway 97 near Cache Creek reopened in a limited capacity on Saturday.
Despite the easing evacuation orders in certain wildfire-affected regions, the BCWS is monitoring a potentially unstable weather system that may trigger more lightning strikes and wildfires in southern B.C. Thousands of evacuees have been able to return home recently. Rick van Kesteren, a provincial fire information officer, mentioned that the smoke engulfing southern B.C. is likely to linger for several days. While the smoke may lower surface temperatures and assist firefighting efforts, it poses visibility challenges for aircraft.
Van Kesteren highlighted the heightened fire risk in south-central B.C., particularly concerning lightning strikes that could spark wildfires. The fire information officer emphasized the need to be proactive and position crews strategically in areas prone to lightning strikes. With over 120 fires burning across B.C., firefighting teams from New Brunswick and Quebec are being deployed to aid in containment efforts.
Nicholas Kosovic, co-owner of the Stagecoach Cafe in Clinton, shared his experience of returning to the community after evacuation orders were downgraded. The Pear Lake wildfire remains the largest in B.C. this year, covering 1,593 square kilometers as of Saturday evening. Highway 97, closed since July 28 due to the Pear Lake fire, fully reopened on Saturday. Another section of Highway 97 in the Okanagan also reopened partially on Thursday. Both highway stretches remain active wildfire zones, prohibiting any stopping along them.
The Bald Range wildfire near Summerland spans over 205 square kilometers and remains uncontained, though officials are optimistic about more residents returning home soon. Highway 1 north of Hope in the Fraser Canyon is closed due to ongoing wildfires in the region. The Brunswick Creek wildfire complex near Boston Bar covers an area exceeding 700 square kilometers as of Saturday evening.
