Marcus Ericsson emerged victorious in the first Ontario Honda Dealers Indy event held at Markham. Securing his fifth IndyCar career win, Ericsson overtook Romain Grosjean in the final four laps. Following closely, Grosjean finished second, with Will Power in third place and season leader Alex Palou in fourth.
This marked the inaugural year of the race in Markham, Ontario, following its relocation from Toronto’s Exhibition Place, where it had been hosted since 1986. Notably, Palou started 12th on the grid, breaking a streak of 30 races within the top 10 in qualifying.
Heading into the race day, Palou maintained a commanding 110-point lead over Kyle Kirkwood in the driver standings as he pursued his fifth IndyCar title. Unfortunately for Kirkwood, his race ended abruptly on the 53rd lap after contact with the inside wall at Turn 3, followed by a collision with the outer barrier.
During practice and qualifying sessions, Louis Foster showcased impressive speed, securing his first pole position of the season. Foster had foreseen chaos on the 3.52-kilometre road course around downtown Markham, encompassing 12 turns and spanning Kennedy Road, Enterprise Boulevard, Unionville GO tracks, and Highway 407. This prediction proved accurate as Foster’s race came to an early end on Sunday, crashing in the 43rd lap after a contact incident with Ericsson and subsequent collision with the outer wall at Turn 3.
