A woman has shared her shock after discovering her elderly mother covered in bruises at the care facility where she resided. Mechelle McBride’s mother, Elizabeth, lived at Greyfriars Care Home in Mount Vernon, Scotland. Throughout her stay there, Mechelle observed her mother’s health declining and noticed unexplained bruises and wounds on her.
Elizabeth, who was battling vascular dementia, passed away in December 2022 at the age of 81. Mechelle took legal action against the care home, resulting in a substantial compensation for Elizabeth’s estate. Expressing her devastation, Mechelle described witnessing her mother’s inadequate care at the nursing home as “appalling.”
Wanting to raise awareness and prevent other families from facing similar challenges, Mechelle decided to report her concerns to the Care Inspectorate. Despite feeling ignored initially, all her complaints were validated by the regulatory body responsible for overseeing social care services.
Emphasizing that her motive was not monetary gain but rather seeking accountability, Mechelle highlighted the substandard care her mother received at the facility. She noted instances of repeated falls, significant weight loss, and unexplained injuries that Elizabeth endured while under their care.
Despite Mechelle’s efforts to address the issues directly with the care home, she faced resistance. Subsequently, she escalated the matter to the Care Inspectorate, prompting an investigation that confirmed the validity of her grievances. The inspection report raised concerns regarding Elizabeth’s nutritional care and communication gaps between the care service and Mechelle.
Taking a stand for her mother’s rights, Mechelle enlisted the services of Thompsons Solicitors Scotland to pursue a legal claim. The care home admitted liability, resulting in a significant financial settlement. Mechelle’s decision to share her story aims to prompt improvements in care standards and prevent similar injustices from occurring in the future.
