A man who had been receiving disability benefits due to claims of being too weak to lift a phone was discovered participating in a 10K race and engaging in physical activities that contradicted his supposed immobility.
Ryan Scott, aged 39, had asserted that a workplace accident had left him incapable of basic tasks like lifting objects or walking short distances. However, an anonymous tip prompted investigators from the Department for Work and Pensions to uncover evidence showing Scott completing a 10K race and returning to paid plastering work.
Surveillance footage captured Scott effortlessly climbing ladders, carrying heavy equipment, and working on construction sites, leading to the revelation that he had fraudulently received over £7,600 in Personal Independence Payment benefits. Subsequently, Scott was sentenced to a community order and fined by the court for not reporting his improved health status that enabled him to participate in physical activities.
The court learned that Scott had failed to inform authorities about his enhanced physical condition, which allowed him to enter and complete a 10K race after previously claiming legitimate benefits. Surveillance conducted in March 2024 documented Scott’s actions contradicting his disability claims, resulting in an overpayment of benefits totaling £7,625.68.
Scott admitted that he felt well enough to undertake the race but stated that the effort was strenuous and left him bedridden for two weeks afterward. Initially, he had cited difficulties in daily tasks such as cooking, lifting objects, and walking short distances without assistance.
Addressing the magistrates, Scott apologized for the situation, attributing his actions to a period of depression and medication use. Despite having started repaying the misappropriated funds, Scott was sentenced to a 15-day community order and financial penalties. The court emphasized that there was no evidence of deliberate deceit initially and acknowledged Scott’s lack of prior convictions.
