An elderly couple passed away within 41 hours of each other, with their family attributing their deaths to their inseparable bond. Geoff and Gerrie Gradus, who had been married for 67 years and operated a popular Kosher shop in Margate, Cliftonville, experienced a heartbreaking loss when Geoff, 89, died at home surrounded by family. Tragically, Gerrie, 86, followed suit less than two days later.

Their youngest daughter, Ruth, expressed her belief that her mother struggled to cope without her husband of 67 years. Recognized in the local Jewish community for their shop, G’s Stores, the couple was known for their loving relationship, often seen holding hands and exchanging affectionate gestures.

Ruth recalled how Gerrie’s demeanor changed as Geoff’s health declined, indicating that her mother’s health deteriorated once her husband fell ill. The couple first met when Gerrie, then 17, was on holiday in Cliftonville, Kent, eventually marrying Geoff three years later. Despite facing early hardships with the loss of their first two children at birth, they went on to have four more children and operated their beloved shop known for its delectable doughnuts and cheesecake.

With the rise of supermarkets in the 1980s, the couple sold their shop but continued their caring ways by purchasing and managing Wychdene Residential Home in Broadstairs, Kent. Active members of various community organizations, Geoff and Gerrie were known for their involvement, generosity, and dedication to helping others.

Tragedy struck the family again when their son Spencer died in a tragic accident, but the couple remained pillars of support in their community. From leading Margate Swimming Club to hosting exchange students, they left a lasting impact on those around them. Ruth fondly remembered their shared activities, community involvement, and fundraising efforts, emphasizing their unwavering commitment to each other and those around them.

Jutta Bick, recalling fond memories of the couple, described Gerrie’s warmth and welcoming spirit during a memorable holiday in 1977. Ruth concluded by highlighting her parents’ enduring legacy of service and companionship, culminating in a joint burial at Margate Jewish Cemetery.
