Upon arrival in Kansas, visitors are greeted by the sweltering heat and high humidity. Recent extreme weather conditions in the area led to a tornado warning being issued, coinciding with the impending arrival of England for the World Cup. The tournament is already characterized by intense heat and humidity, with more challenging conditions expected.

Should England progress to the next stage, they may face Mexico at the iconic Azteca Stadium, known for Maradona’s famous ‘Hand of God’ goal. The team, already showing signs of sunburn, will also have to contend with the effects of altitude at the venue.

Kansas City has taken precautions by establishing tornado evacuation rooms in major buildings, reflecting the seriousness with which residents approach tornado warnings. Additionally, experts attribute the worsening weather patterns to global warming and the ‘El Nino effect.’

During a previous visit to Mexico City, members of the Football Supporters Association noted the significant impact of altitude on players. With temperatures expected to soar in Kansas over the next few weeks, England will need to acclimatize quickly to the extreme conditions of the tournament.

The first game against Croatia in Texas will expose England fans to scorching temperatures, with forecasts indicating temperatures exceeding 30C. However, the Dallas stadium, equipped with a retractable roof and air-conditioning, aims to provide a more comfortable environment for players and spectators.

FIFA’s heat index, known as the Wet Bulb Global Temperature (WBGT), sets a threshold of 28°C (82°F) for concerns regarding elite athletes’ health in high-temperature conditions. Miami, where the WBGT is expected to reach 30C, poses a high-risk environment for matches. Storms in the forecast may lead to game suspensions if they develop within close proximity to the stadiums.

In such cases, a mandatory 30-minute break is enforced for safety reasons, allowing individuals to seek shelter and reduce the risk of lightning strikes. Play can only resume after a 30-minute period following the last lightning occurrence.
