An outbreak of the deadly rat virus has affected approximately 150 passengers aboard a luxury cruise ship, with cases also reported outside the vessel. Three individuals on the MV Hondius liner, including an elderly Dutch couple and a German woman, have succumbed to the Andes strain of hantavirus, while a British passenger was evacuated due to critical condition in South Africa. The virus, known to spread through close contacts, prompted authorities to monitor individuals who disembarked before the fatalities, despite the cruise ship’s origin in Argentina. Hantavirus transmission occurs when humans interact with infected rodents and their excreta, saliva, or urine, posing risks through inhalation or direct contact. Officials are conducting contact tracing among the 150 passengers from 23 countries, including the UK, to identify potential cases and limit disease spread. The luxury liner, initially stranded off Cape Verde, West Africa, was granted permission to dock on the Canary Islands by Spain, where evacuation is scheduled to commence next week. However, the president of the Canary Islands has expressed objections to allowing the ship entry.
