The shift occurred as a 28-year-old man was being questioned by the police on suspicion of killing the former Cabinet Minister, with fresh footage emerging of his arrest. Laurence Taylor, the Head of National Counter Terrorism Policing, stated that the investigation has been handed over to Counter Terrorism Policing based on advancements made by Devon and Cornwall Police.
The main suspect, a White British man, has been re-arrested on suspicion of terrorism-related offenses, allowing authorities to detain him for up to 14 days under the Terrorism Act. The re-arrest took place in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, where the suspect resides, located approximately 270 miles away from Ms. Widdecombe’s home in Haytor, Devon, where her body was discovered. The collaboration between Counter Terrorism Policing and local law enforcement has been ongoing since the initiation of the murder inquiry.
The investigation has revealed CCTV footage showing the suspect handling a wooden stick near a red Vauxhall Corsa on the day of the incident. Neighbors described him as a solitary individual who distanced himself from others following his father’s passing in December. Both the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, and Ms. Mahmood paid homage to Ms. Widdecombe’s impactful career in politics, highlighting her strong convictions and fearless advocacy. Downing Street has urged the public to show respect for the ongoing police investigation and refrain from engaging in speculative discussions on social media regarding the case.
