As pressure mounts for the government to introduce water education into the curriculum, safety experts have released crucial 10-point guidance amid a rising death toll from drowning incidents.

Following the tragic death of an 18th individual in open water during the heatwave, education authorities have been sternly warned as children sought relief in rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and the sea during a scorching half-term.

The Outdoor Swimming Society has echoed the call for enhanced education on water safety, emphasizing the need for better utilization of social media platforms as the Met Office predicts a hot summer. They highlight that the key to reducing fatalities lies in educating children on how to safely enjoy water activities rather than simply advising them to stay away.

Kate Rew from the society, the author of the Outdoor Swimmers’ Handbook, advocates for targeted safety campaigns on platforms like TikTok and Instagram to address the lack of safety awareness in recent years. She expresses concern over data showing a surge in drowning incidents among underprivileged and culturally diverse children, underscoring the necessity for increased government intervention, especially considering that a quarter of children leave school without basic swimming skills.

She remarked, “Statistics indicate that in the most deprived regions of England, less than half of children can swim 25 meters by the end of primary school, compared to approximately three-quarters in more affluent areas. Swimming in a warm indoor pool differs significantly from swimming the same distance in cold, flowing outdoor water.”

Reinforcing the importance of swimming lessons, improved pool access, and increased opportunities for building water confidence for both children and adults, she emphasizes that swimming is not only an accessible and popular form of exercise but also crucial for health, confidence, freedom, and enjoyment, in addition to safety.

The Outdoor Swimming Society has now shared their top 10 safety tips for summer swimming, addressing various risks and precautions to ensure a safer experience in natural water bodies. From avoiding alcohol and drugs before swimming to understanding the dangers of open water environments, the guidance aims to promote responsible and secure aquatic activities for all individuals.

Overall, the emphasis remains on the necessity of comprehensive water education, increased access to swimming facilities, and targeted safety campaigns to prevent further tragedies and promote a culture of safe and enjoyable outdoor swimming experiences.
