Chinese students are being prepared for life in the United States by attending specialized boot camps in China, commonly referred to as “ICE camps.” These camps aim to equip young individuals planning to study at American universities with skills to handle various real-life scenarios, including dealing with crimes like kidnappings, robberies, and interactions with US immigration authorities. The rise of such privately operated training programs is a response to growing concerns among parents about violent crime in US cities and stricter immigration policies.
Participants in these camps engage in simulated exercises such as responding to a mock kidnapping where they are tied up and coerced to make ransom demands. Additionally, they are trained to recognize and address potential threats like phone scams, hate crimes, racism, and encounters with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.
A student shared their sentiments, expressing a heightened sense of awareness gained from the training, even though they hope to never have to use the skills learned. Despite apprehensions, the United States remains a preferred destination for Chinese students seeking international education, followed by the UK and Australia. The number of Chinese students attending US universities has slightly declined but still exceeded 260,000 during the last academic year.
While Chinese universities continue to enhance their reputation, pursuing a Western degree remains prestigious as it offers opportunities for English practice and exposure to academic freedom. However, concerns persist among Chinese parents due to reports of academics facing deportation, airport detentions, and arrests, exacerbated by the US government’s immigration crackdown and China’s alleged interference in American institutions.
In response to these worries, Chinese authorities not only provide pre-study training for government-sponsored programs but also issue travel advisories, particularly warning students heading to the US about potential challenges with immigration officials. The emergence of private “ICE camps” goes a step further by simulating real-world scenarios to better prepare students for life abroad.
In the UK, the influx of Chinese students has remained steady amid the pandemic, partly attributed to parental concerns redirecting students from the US to British institutions.
