A rescue operation has been initiated to relocate a group of thirty beluga whales that have been stranded at a closed theme park in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada since 2024. The whales were at risk of euthanasia if they were not moved. Following approval from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the whales are scheduled to be transferred to aquariums in the United States and Spain pending successful veterinary checks.
Belugas, a protected species known for their sociable and curious nature, typically inhabit the Arctic Ocean in pods. They are recognized for their vocal communication skills, using clicks, whistles, and other sounds for interaction. The whales at the theme park have faced challenges due to financial difficulties, leading to its closure and the deaths of 20 whales since 2019.
Five aquariums have been designated to accommodate the belugas, with two going to Spain’s Oceanogràfic València and the rest to facilities in the United States, including SeaWorld in San Diego and San Antonio, Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, and Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. The relocation process will prioritize the comfort and well-being of the whales, providing them with high-quality environments, diverse seafood for nutrition, and access to medical care as needed.
In a separate incident, a humpback whale named “Timmy” was successfully rescued after being stranded off Germany’s coast for five weeks. The whale was freed using a special barge and transported to the North Sea via Denmark, showcasing a successful example of marine rescue efforts. Environment minister Till Backhaus praised the operation, emphasizing the importance of such initiatives for marine wildlife conservation.
