A man has confessed to killing a dog walker at random due to his inability to differentiate between reality and fantasy. Dawood Safi, aged 23, also acknowledged stabbing his landlord and a teenage boy during a period of abnormal mental functioning. The incidents occurred in Midhurst Gardens, Uxbridge, west London, on October 27 last year.

Safi pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Mr. Broadhurst on the grounds of diminished responsibility caused by his psychotic condition. He had initially faced charges of murdering Wayne Broadhurst and attempting to murder his landlord, Shahzad Farrukh, and a 14-year-old boy.

Jonathan Laidlaw KC, the prosecutor, informed the court that multiple medical experts confirmed Safi was experiencing a mental abnormality during the attacks, leading the prosecution to drop the murder charge. The experts noted the nonsensical and frenzied nature of the killing as evidence of Safi’s severe mental illness.

Safi, an Afghan immigrant, resided with Mr. Farrukh in Midhurst Gardens. On the day of the incidents, he was found armed with a large knife in the property’s annex and subsequently attacked Mr. Broadhurst, resulting in fatal stab wounds. Safi also admitted to possessing an offensive weapon and is set to stand trial for the attempted murders.

Having entered the UK in a lorry in 2020 and later being granted asylum in 2022, Safi’s case has raised concerns about mental health and public safety.
