Several theme parks are set to close following disappointing seasons, with one beloved park in the UK facing closure. In Somerset, the Brean Theme Park entered liquidation earlier this year, joining a list of other parks shutting down. Glenwood Caverns in Colorado filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February due to financial and reputational issues. Six Flags announced the closure of six “underperforming” locations within its amusement and waterpark portfolio after reporting a loss exceeding $1.2 billion in 2025.
Another long-standing amusement park is bidding farewell in 2026. The Wild Waves Theme and Water Park in Washington State has confirmed that this will be its final operating season after nearly 50 years in business due to escalating operational expenses. Premier Parks, the operator, expressed gratitude to guests, employees, and the community for their support over the years. The park’s closure is attributed to significant losses incurred post-COVID shutdown, leading to the decision to cease operations at the end of the 2026 season.
Despite opening its final season on May 23 and operating until November 1, Wild Waves reassured guests that all rides and water slides will be available throughout this period. Additionally, previously purchased season passes and packages will be honored. The park plans to celebrate its legacy with themed events and special promotions during its farewell year.
In a surprising turn, the amusement park’s replacement will be a massive one-million-square-foot warehouse, a move met with skepticism by locals nostalgic for the theme park. Earlier considerations for the site included a hotel and a convention center, but the warehouse proposal has taken precedence. Co-owner Jeff Stock acknowledged the community’s emotional attachment to the park and pledged a respectful transition to a project that will bring lasting benefits to the area.
Development plans for the site are in the early stages, focusing on initiatives that will positively impact the city and its surroundings. Further details will be shared as the project progresses through planning and community review processes.
