People with poor credit or lacking a permanent address will now have an easier time opening a basic bank account as major financial institutions have agreed to enhance their services. This initiative follows the discovery of widespread misconduct by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Basic bank accounts provide essential services like receiving wages, benefits, and paying bills, although they do not include features such as overdrafts to prevent overspending. The FCA’s investigation revealed that a significant number of interactions with basic bank accounts were rated as poor or very poor.
The research highlighted that providers were inconsistent in offering these accounts to individuals who could benefit from them, particularly those experiencing financial difficulties, lacking identification, or without a fixed address. Many firms neglected to mention basic bank accounts at all and directed vulnerable customers towards online applications that were not suitable for their circumstances. In response to these findings, banks and building societies have committed to individual improvements, including ensuring the appropriate account is provided to customers promptly and with clear communication.
Furthermore, they have pledged to simplify the account opening process for customers without standard identification or a fixed address and to identify vulnerable customers early on. Currently, approximately 7 million fee-free basic bank accounts are active in the UK. Emad Aladhal, the FCA’s director of retail banking, emphasized the importance of financial inclusion through basic bank accounts and the need for banking firms to enhance their customer engagement for better outcomes.
Peter Tyler, Director of Personal Banking at UK Finance, acknowledged the significance of basic bank accounts in promoting financial independence and emphasized the industry’s commitment to improving standards and accessibility. The Breaking the Cycle initiative, which offers practical support to individuals facing barriers to essential banking services, plays a crucial role in this effort.
