Kate Howson initially mistook an itchy red spot on her back for a rash caused by carrying a backpack while on vacation, but it turned out to be a significant discovery. The 32-year-old, along with her partner Rhys, had the opportunity to attend two destination weddings – one in New Zealand in February 2024 and another in Thailand at the end of the same month. Opting to take a break from work, the couple from Cardiff embarked on a travel adventure to coincide with the wedding celebrations.

During their travels, Kate noticed an itch on her back where a mole was located. Upon inspection by her partner, they observed redness around the area. Kate attributed it to her backpack rubbing against her skin during their month-long journey. Seeking advice, they sent a photo to Kate’s sister-in-law, a doctor, who advised getting it checked upon their return.

Upon returning home in March, Kate noticed the spot had darkened and changed shape. She took a comparison photo to show her GP. Subsequently, she was referred to the dermatology department at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, where specialists indicated a high likelihood of the growth being cancerous. The mole was promptly removed and confirmed to be a melanoma.

Further medical procedures included a sentinel lymph node biopsy to track potential cancer spread. Results revealed a stage progression to stage three melanoma. Kate’s treatment journey involved considerations for fertility preservation, including discussions with her oncologist regarding potential impacts on fertility due to treatment side effects. Despite challenges with IVF procedures, Kate remained resilient, emphasizing the unexpected emotional toll fertility issues added to her cancer battle.

As Kate commenced her treatment in April, she accessed counseling services through Tenovus Cancer Care for emotional support. Reflecting on her experience, Kate highlighted the importance of sharing personal stories to create awareness and support others facing similar challenges.

Advice from senior support line nurse Rhian Jones emphasized the significance of monitoring skin changes and seeking medical attention promptly for any mole alterations. Kate and Rhys continue their love for travel, prioritizing sun safety and regular skin checks.

Kate’s journey underscores the importance of vigilance in skin health and proactive healthcare measures. Her story serves as a reminder of the resilience needed to navigate unexpected challenges and the significance of seeking support through difficult times.
