Britons and other holidaymakers visiting a popular destination will no longer need to fill out paper passenger cards upon arrival. Instead, travelers arriving at Australian airports will complete digital cards, a requirement for both visitors and residents entering the country.

Over 450,000 passengers have already tested digital-only cards on Qantas flights landing in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane since October 2024, as reported by an Australian news outlet. The program is set to expand to Qantas flights to Perth and Adelaide by the end of 2026 and will eventually be implemented at all international airports and seaports within the next 12 to 18 months.

Initially accessible via a webpage, the digital form is expected to evolve with industry collaboration to offer in-app functionality. The government highlighted the trial’s “significant success” based on anecdotal feedback.

Tourism Minister Don Farrell expressed that simplifying and expediting the arrival process allows visitors to spend more time enjoying Australia’s attractions. This initiative aims to enhance the visitor experience and support tourism operators in making Australia a more welcoming destination.

The implementation of the scheme will be funded through a $56.1 million investment over a four-year period. It is designed to streamline passenger processing, enable pre-collection of digital information, and enhance data accuracy for risk assessments.

Additionally, the government mentioned that the system will enable updates for managing global risks and events, such as biosecurity concerns. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke emphasized the importance of this modernization for Australia’s prosperity and national security, providing a seamless border process integrated into everyday digital life.

The funding allocated for the program is expected to bolster efforts to enhance airport and cruise departure procedures, especially with the anticipated increase in travelers leading up to the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.
