Home surveillance footage captured the moment police apprehended a man suspected of the murder of former Member of Parliament Ann Widdecombe, occurring approximately 300 miles away from her residence. Widdecombe, a 78-year-old former government official who later gained fame as a television personality, was discovered deceased at her home in Haytor on Dartmoor due to severe injuries. A 28-year-old white British male was taken into custody on suspicion of her murder, with video footage depicting the arrest carried out by armed officers in South Yorkshire.
The arrested individual, shirtless and in handcuffs, was escorted through a garden away from the residence in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, at around 9 pm. Subsequently, the suspect was reapprehended on suspicion of involvement in acts of terrorism. The investigation into Widdecombe’s tragic death is now being overseen by counter-terrorism authorities, following the announcement of her passing on July 10th. Initially, the circumstances were undisclosed as a murder, but it was later confirmed by Devon and Cornwall Police that a murder investigation was underway, indicating that the attack on Widdecombe likely occurred the day before her discovery.
Another man, aged 26, was initially detained on suspicion of murder but was subsequently released as the police determined he was not linked to the crime. Laurence Taylor, the head of UK counter-terrorism policing, disclosed that new evidence and information emerged during the investigation, prompting Counter Terrorism Policing to assume control of the case. Taylor emphasized the pursuit of various leads to ascertain the motive behind the assault.
