Authorities in eastern Austria have arrested a 39-year-old suspect in connection with the discovery of rat poison in popular HiPP baby food jars, prompting a widespread product recall. The contaminated baby food was found on supermarket shelves across central Europe, leading to concerns among consumers.

After the incident came to light last month, HiPP took immediate action by recalling affected baby food jars in Austria, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. The company expressed relief at the suspect’s arrest and pledged to provide updates as more information becomes available.

The investigation was initiated by the Burgenland State Criminal Police Office following the discovery of poisoned baby food in a supermarket in Eisenstadt on April 18. The suspect is currently undergoing questioning, with details of the case being closely guarded.

The public prosecutor’s office in Burgenland has launched an investigation into the suspected deliberate endangerment of the public. Reports indicate that the poison found in the baby food jars was highly toxic, though no injuries were reported as the tampered jars were seized before consumption.

The tampering is believed to have occurred in 190-gram jars of baby food containing carrots and potatoes for five-month-old infants, sold at SPAR supermarkets in Austria. As a precautionary measure, HiPP has recalled all its baby food jars from SPAR supermarkets in Austria, including other related stores.

HiPP emphasized that the recall was a proactive step and not due to any fault in their product quality. The company stated that their products left the facility in perfect condition, underscoring their commitment to consumer safety.

Customers who noticed the tampering alerted the authorities, preventing any consumption of the contaminated baby food. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working diligently to ensure the safety of consumers and prevent similar incidents in the future.
