Nigel Farage faces criticism for avoiding public scrutiny ahead of important local elections by canceling a scheduled TV interview on Sunday. The Reform UK leader was originally slated to appear on BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg but withdrew last minute, citing a change of plans according to the presenter.

Amidst allegations of failing to disclose a £5 million sum, a Labour source accused Reform of evading accountability before the elections, insinuating Farage’s reluctance to address the issue. The absence of Farage from the interview drew sharp criticism from other party leaders on the show, with Tory leader Kemi Badenoch labeling him as “too scared” and Green Party leader Zack Polanski suggesting he was “on the run.”

In response, a Reform spokesman clarified that Farage was engaged in campaigning in Clacton over the weekend. The controversy stems from Farage’s failure to report a £5 million gift from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne before becoming an MP in 2024, as required by parliamentary regulations. The undisclosed sum has sparked calls for an investigation into Farage’s conduct.

While Farage claims the substantial amount was intended for his personal security rather than a political contribution, questions persist over the lack of disclosure in the members’ register of interests. The gift from Harborne predates Farage’s decision to run in Clacton, raising concerns over potential breaches of parliamentary standards.

Acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, both Labour and Tory officials have called for further scrutiny of Farage’s actions, with the Conservatives referring the matter to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner. This latest development follows previous donations totaling £22 million to Reform by Harborne since 2019, adding complexity to the ongoing debate surrounding political funding and transparency.

Reform maintains that all regulations have been adhered to, asserting that the £5 million was an unrestricted personal donation. As the controversy unfolds, public trust in political integrity continues to be a central issue ahead of the upcoming local elections.
