The dismissal of the top Foreign Office official involved in authorizing security clearance for Peter Mandelson is set to be examined by Members of Parliament on Tuesday.

Sir Olly Robbins will be questioned by the Foreign Affairs Committee regarding the clearance granted to the former US ambassador despite concerns raised during the vetting process.

During Sir Olly’s tenure as the head civil servant at the Foreign Office, a decision was made to override recommendations from UK Security Vetting, allowing Mandelson to secure a prestigious position.

Number 10 clarified that Keir Starmer was not informed of Mandelson’s initial clearance denial. Following allegations of misleading statements, the Prime Minister initiated an urgent investigation into the approval of Mandelson’s vetting process. This investigation coincides with the Prime Minister’s scheduled appearance in the Commons to address related inquiries.

An ex-Whitehall official, Lord Simon McDonald, criticized the swift dismissal of Sir Olly, suggesting it was orchestrated by Number 10 without due process or fairness.

Lord McDonald also disputed the use of the term “failed” to describe the vetting outcome, emphasizing the nuanced nature of security vetting procedures and the potential for mitigating circumstances.

Keir Starmer has faced ongoing scrutiny for appointing Mandelson as the UK’s representative in Washington. Mandelson, a contentious figure with ties to past Prime Ministers Gordon Brown and Tony Blair, was tasked with enhancing UK-US relations. However, his tenure was short-lived as revelations of his association with Epstein led to his dismissal.
