A recent report by consumer advocate Which? reveals that several major broadband providers in the UK are failing to meet customer expectations for reliable service. The study indicates that many smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing larger brands by offering faster speeds, more dependable connections, and better value.

According to the research, internet connection issues like frequent dropouts are common complaints among consumers. Problems such as slow download speeds and service outages are also prevalent frustrations reported by users.

An overwhelming 91% of broadband customers have encountered issues with their service in the past year, indicating that only a small fraction of households have experienced trouble-free connectivity. Among the leading providers, Sky had the highest rate of frequent dropouts at 38%, although these issues were promptly resolved. Virgin Media also faced challenges, with 30% of users experiencing regular connection dropouts despite paying premium prices for broadband services. Additionally, around a quarter of Virgin customers expressed dissatisfaction with slow download speeds.

Sky users voiced discontent with the performance, with nearly one in three stating their broadband speed was inadequate. Other underperforming providers include TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service, which received low ratings from customers.

On the positive side, smaller UK providers continue to excel in service quality. Zen Internet, Community Fibre, and Hyperoptic emerged as top performers, with customers reporting fewer reliability issues compared to major brands. Plusnet stood out among larger providers, outperforming rivals like Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky.

The findings are consistent with previous Which? research, showing that smaller broadband companies consistently outperform larger providers in terms of reliability, customer service, and value for money. Which? recommends that households explore alternative providers in their area and consider switching if they are dissatisfied with their current service. The Ofcom broadband checker is a useful tool to assess available broadband networks.

In response to the report, a spokesperson from Virgin Media highlighted their ongoing investments in improving services, with official data from Ofcom indicating that Virgin Media has the lowest complaint rates among broadband providers. Independent data from Opensignal also ranks Virgin Media as the top performer across various broadband categories, reinforcing their commitment to delivering high-quality services to customers.
