A fishing enthusiast and social media influencer, Henry Gibbs, narrowly escaped a serious injury after a shark encounter during his maiden diving experience in a popular tourist destination. Gibbs, hailing from New Zealand, expressed immense gratitude for retaining his leg and foot functionality following a shark bite incident while spearfishing in Fiji on July 24.
After undergoing four surgeries and a skin graft, Gibbs remains optimistic about a full recovery as he shared on Instagram. Reflecting on the incident, he acknowledged the risks associated with being in the shark’s natural hunting grounds and emphasized the importance of learning from such encounters to prevent similar situations in the future.
Filming his dive, Gibbs recounted spotting several grey reef sharks in the vicinity before the unexpected attack. He speculated that the shark’s behavior might have been triggered by the disturbance caused by the boat and the activity in the water. Despite the signs of escalating aggression displayed by the shark, Gibbs admitted underestimating the potential threat it posed due to its size.
Drawing lessons from the ordeal, Gibbs recommended using plain black wetsuits in tropical waters to avoid provoking sharks and advised against ignoring signs of agitation or aggression in these creatures. He emphasized the need to assess the situation based on the shark’s behavior rather than its size, urging caution and vigilance during underwater activities.
