In response to the crisis, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand has indicated that there are 30 Canadians and permanent residents in Nepal and Tibet whose safety is yet to be confirmed. Among the missing Canadians are Dhaval and Megha Shah, a couple from Port Moody, B.C., as confirmed by Nikita Shah, Dhaval’s cousin. The couple, who were on a spiritual journey in Nepal, were last heard from on Tuesday night while staying at Hotel Kailash.
Global Affairs Canada has announced the dispatch of five consular officials to Kathmandu to assist Canadians and collaborate with local authorities. The Nepal Tourism Board had previously reported 25 missing Canadians. The treacherous conditions in the region have led to the destruction of dozens of bridges and nearly 40 kilometers of roads, hampering search and rescue efforts.
The United Nations has activated a $2 million US emergency fund to aid in medical care, shelter, and water provisions. Emergency teams have been mobilized, with additional support standing by. The majority of casualties and missing persons are concentrated in Nepal, with a smaller number in Tibet.
